Designing the Perfect Herb Garden
Formal knot gardens date back to medieval monasteries. Modern herb gardens can be as small as a windowsill or as large as a dedicated plot. Group herbs by water needs: Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage) prefer dry conditions; moisture-loving herbs (mint, basil, cilantro) need regular water.
Plant tall herbs (dill, fennel, angelica) at the back. Include paths for access and harvest. Containers allow tender herbs to be moved indoors for winter.
Companion planting: basil near tomatoes improves flavor and repels pests. Chamomile near other herbs improves their health. Raised beds improve drainage for Mediterranean herbs..
