About Long Pepper
Was actually more popular than black pepper in ancient Greece and Rome. It has a more complex flavor than black pepper - hotter initially but with sweet, earthy, and floral undertones. It looks like tiny pine cones on a spike. It contains piperlongumine, being studied for anti-cancer properties. It is native to India and Indonesia. It was one of the first spices traded along the Silk Road. It fell out of favor when black pepper became easier to obtain. It is experiencing a revival among chefs. It is used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. It is more potent than black pepper.
