Thyme
About Thyme
Thymol, its primary active compound, is the main ingredient in Listerine mouthwash and is a powerful antiseptic. Ancient Egyptians used it in embalming. The Greeks burned it as incense in temples (thymos means courage in Greek). Roman soldiers bathed in thyme-infused water for vigor. Over 350 species exist. Creeping thyme can withstand being walked on and releases fragrance when trodden on. It was a symbol of courage in the Middle Ages - knights wore scarves embroidered with thyme. It is one of the best honey plants - thyme honey from Greece is prized. It pairs with almost any savory dish.
