About Lemon Balm

Called the elixir of life by Paracelsus, the famous 16th century physician. Thomas Jefferson grew it at Monticello. Clinical studies show it reduces anxiety and improves mood, with effects comparable to some pharmaceutical anxiolytics. It is a member of the mint family but has a lemon scent. The scientific name Melissa means bee in Greek - it attracts bees prolifically. It was the main ingredient in Carmelite Water, a medieval tonic. It spreads aggressively like mint. Fresh leaves make excellent tea. It can be used in salads, fish dishes, and desserts. It self-seeds prolifically.
