About Nettle

The stinging hairs contain formic acid and histamine, but cooking completely neutralizes them. Once cooked, nettles are one of the most nutritious greens available - higher in iron than spinach and rich in protein. They have been used for thousands of years in Europe as food and medicine. German soldiers in WWI wore nettle fiber uniforms when cotton was scarce. Nettle tea is a traditional remedy for allergies and joint pain. Clinical studies show it may reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is an excellent compost activator and liquid fertilizer. It is one of the most important plants for wildlife, supporting over 40 species of insects.
