About Star Anise

The fruit is the primary source of shikimic acid, the precursor for synthesizing oseltamivir (Tamiflu) - the antiviral drug used against influenza. Each star-shaped fruit has 8 points, each containing a seed. It is a key ingredient in Chinese five-spice powder and Vietnamese pho. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for 3,000+ years. It contains anethole, the same compound as in fennel and anise. Japan produces most star anise for pharmaceutical use. It is beautiful enough to be used as a natural decoration. Overharvesting threatens wild populations in southern China.
