About Sumac

The dried, ground berries of the sumac shrub produce a deep red-purple spice with a tart, lemony flavor. It is a key ingredient in zaatar spice blend. It has been used in Middle Eastern cooking for thousands of years. It contains antioxidants at levels higher than many common fruits. It is an excellent source of vitamin C. It is used as a garnish on hummus, salads, and grilled meats. It is a natural acidulant that can replace lemon in some dishes. Poison sumac is a completely different plant - culinary sumac is perfectly safe. It grows wild across the Mediterranean and Middle East. It is a beautiful landscape plant with brilliant red fall color.
