About Lemongrass (Citronella)

The source of citronella oil, the most widely used natural insect repellent. It is effective against mosquitoes for about 2 hours per application. Java citronella produces the best oil. It is also used in soaps, candles, and perfumery. It is a tall grass growing 1.5-2 meters. It is closely related to lemongrass but is a different species (Cymbopogon nardus). The essential oil contains citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol. It is safe for topical use and is considered GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the FDA. It is cultivated commercially in Indonesia, China, and Vietnam. It is drought-tolerant once established.
