A tropical grass that can grow 1.5 meters tall. It is a staple of Thai, Vietnamese, and Sri Lankan cuisines. The essential oil contains citral (up to 85%), which has demonstrated antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It is used as a natural insect repellent - more effective than DEET against some mosquito species. It is one of the most popular herbs in Brazilian folk medicine. It makes an excellent tea. Only the tender lower stalk is used in cooking. It can be grown from grocery store stalks placed in water. Over 50 species of Cymbopogon exist. It is used in commercial perfumery and soap-making.
